If you follow the US power market closely you will know that California and Texas are far ahead of all other states in terms of installed battery capacity. California has 44.3% of the total US battery capacity followed by Texas at 28.6%. Arizona (8.0%), Nevada (4.3%) and Florida (2.1%) round out the top 5 states. When analyzing the EIA’s January data, it was the 6th ranked state which was most interesting to me. How many would have placed Hawaii in the #6 spot, just behind Florida? Hawaii has 1.6% of the total US battery capacity. New Mexico, Colorado, Oregon, and Massachusetts round out the top ten and then all other states are less than 1% each. In fact, US states ranked 11 through 41 combined only account for 6% of total battery capacity and 9 states are currently reporting zero battery capacity as of January 2025. I thought it would be interesting to analyze the battery capacity against each state’s population. Residential load is only one factor in electricity demand, but it is one relative comparison. I compared the latest population statistics and with that calculation, Hawaii ranks 2nd with only Nevada slightly ahead. California and Texas are expected to… continue reading
